The short answer
To appear in Google AI Overviews, hold a top organic position and format content so it can be excerpted: question phrased headings, a direct 40 to 60 word answer under each one, lists and tables, and schema markup. Ranking still helps, but less than it did: Ahrefs found 76 percent of AI Overview citations ranked in Google's top ten in July 2025, and about 38 percent in its March 2026 update.
Where AI Overviews Pull Their Citations From
Google AI Overviews are AI generated summaries placed above the organic results, and they cite the pages the summary was built from. Ahrefs' tracking shows that link loosening: 76 percent of cited pages ranked in the top ten for the query in July 2025, but only about 38 percent in its March 2026 update covering 4 million AI Overview URLs, as Google leans more on related fan out searches. AI Overviews do not bypass ranking, but ranking for the exact query is no longer the whole game.
That makes the strategy sequential. First, be in the candidate pool by ranking for the target question. Second, out format the other candidates so the system extracts your passage rather than a competitor's. In our experience, a page ranking fourth with a clean, direct answer can get cited over a page ranking first that buries its answer in preamble.
The On Page Structure That Gets Excerpted
Write the question as the heading, phrased the way people search. Directly beneath it, answer in 40 to 60 self contained words that would make sense read aloud with no surrounding context. Then expand. This mirrors how the system assembles overviews: it wants passages that resolve the query without editing.
Support the answer with machine friendly formats. Numbered steps for how to queries. Comparison tables for versus queries. Bulleted criteria for best and cost queries. Add FAQ and article schema so content types are labeled. Keep one idea per paragraph, because extraction happens at the passage level, and a paragraph mixing three ideas gives the system nothing clean to lift.
The most common failure is answering well in the wrong place. Businesses bury their best answers in old blog posts, in PDFs, or across four pages that each cover part of the question. Consolidate each target question onto one canonical page and keep it current, because overviews favor fresh, dated content on topics that change, like costs and regulations. Internal links should point at that canonical page with the question as anchor text, telling Google which page is the designated answer. When two of your own pages half answer the same query, they split relevance, and both usually lose the citation to a competitor who answered once, completely. Visible dates and current year references also help on pricing queries, where freshness is weighted heavily.
Which Queries Trigger Overviews
AI Overviews appear most on informational and question shaped queries: definitions, comparisons, costs, and how to searches. Ahrefs found they appear on about 21 percent of keywords, and 99.9 percent of the keywords that trigger them are informational. Target the question versions of your money keywords, because those are the queries where an overview will sit above your listing whether you are in it or not.
Track results by checking your target queries directly and recording citation capture, not just rank. Batch Marketing builds AI Overview capture into its SEO and AEO programs for businesses from corner shops to the Fortune 500.
Commonly Asked Questions
Do you need to rank number one to be cited in AI Overviews?
No. Ahrefs found the first AI Overview citation has a median organic rank of 2, but in its 2026 update most cited pages did not rank in the top ten for the query at all.
Does schema markup guarantee inclusion in AI Overviews?
No. Google states there are no additional requirements or special optimizations for AI Overviews beyond being indexed and eligible to show with a snippet. Schema helps Google understand the content, but it is not a ticket in.
Do AI Overviews reduce website traffic?
Yes, where they appear: Ahrefs found an AI Overview correlates with a 58 percent lower clickthrough rate for the top ranking page in December 2025 data, which is exactly why being the cited source matters. The citation captures the visibility the blue link used to.
