What Is llms.txt and Does Your Website Need One

By Mahlon L., Director of Batch Marketing

The short answer

llms.txt is a proposed standard: a plain markdown file placed at your website's root that gives AI systems a curated index of your most important pages and what they contain. Major AI engines have not confirmed they use it yet, but the file costs nothing to add, carries no risk, and positions a site for crawlers that do adopt it.

The Proposal in Plain Terms

llms.txt is a markdown file served at yoursite.com/llms.txt that lists a site's key pages with short descriptions, giving language models a clean, token efficient map of the content that matters. The proposal came from Jeremy Howard of Answer.AI in late 2024, modeled loosely on robots.txt, but with the opposite intent: robots.txt tells crawlers what to skip, while llms.txt tells AI systems what to read. The file lives alongside robots.txt and sitemap.xml as part of a site's machine facing surface.

The logic is practical. Webpages are wrapped in navigation, scripts, and boilerplate that waste a model's limited context window. A curated markdown index hands the model your best content without the clutter, and a typical file for a small business runs under a page and takes an afternoon to write.

What the Evidence Actually Shows

Honesty matters here. As of early 2026, no major AI provider has publicly confirmed that its crawlers request or reward llms.txt, and Google's John Mueller has compared it to the old keywords meta tag, useful in theory and unproven in practice. Server log analyses across the industry show only sporadic fetches of the file by AI user agents.

At the same time, adoption on the publishing side has grown into the tens of thousands of sites including major developer documentation platforms, because the cost of being early is zero and the cost of being absent, if adoption arrives, is not. The pattern resembles schema markup circa 2012: publishers adopted it before the payoff was proven, and the payoff eventually arrived for those already in place.

How to Add One Correctly

Create a plain markdown file with an H1 of your business name, a one paragraph summary of what you do, and a linked, annotated list of your most important pages: services, pricing, locations, FAQs. Keep it current, keep it under a few hundred lines, and serve it at the root as llms.txt. Some sites also publish an expanded companion version containing full page text for models that want depth, and regenerate both files whenever core pages change.

Do not treat it as a ranking trick or stuff it with keywords. Its only job is accuracy: a correct, current summary a machine can trust.

The Sensible Position

The file belongs in the same category as early schema markup: a low cost, standards shaped bet on how machines will read the web. It does not replace real AEO work, structured data, clean page architecture, and content that directly answers questions, because those are the signals AI engines demonstrably use today. If a vendor sells llms.txt as a guaranteed AI ranking system, treat that claim the way you would treat guaranteed Google rankings.

Batch Marketing includes llms.txt setup within its AEO and GEO services, alongside the structured data and content work that carries the proven weight.

Commonly Asked Questions

Is llms.txt an official web standard?
No. It is a community proposal from late 2024. No standards body has ratified it and no major AI engine has committed to it publicly.
Can llms.txt hurt my SEO?
No. Search engines ignore files they do not use, and the file changes nothing about your pages. The only real risk is letting it go stale and misdescribe your business.
What is the difference between robots.txt and llms.txt?
robots.txt tells crawlers what they may not access. Llms.txt is an invitation, a curated reading list of what AI systems should understand about your site.
