How it works

The Terms, in Plain Words.

How much
Up to $5 million through 7(a), or $500,000 through SBA Express, and up to $5.5 million through 504, per the SBA. Since July 4, 2026 a borrower who takes a 7(a) first can combine the two for up to $10 million.
What it costs
The rate is negotiated with the lender but may not exceed the SBA maximum, per the SBA. 504 loans carry a fixed rate.
How long
7(a): 10 years or less, or up to 25 years for real estate. 504: 10, 20 or 25 years.
How fast
Longer than an advance. The SBA lists its own turnaround on a standard 7(a) at 5 to 10 business days, on top of the lender's underwriting.
What it funds
Working capital, equipment, real estate, renovations, and buying a business or a share of one.
Who qualifies
A for-profit U.S. business that is small under SBA size rules. Since March 2026, every owner must be a U.S. citizen or U.S. national.

Timing depends on the provider, the time of day you apply, and how quickly documents arrive. Files submitted with complete bank statements before 2 PM Eastern on a business day are the ones that fund fastest. Not every file funds in a day.

When it fits

Use It for the Right Job.

Buying the building

Real estate stretches to 25 years, so the payment can sit near what rent costs today.

Buying a business

7(a) funds a change of ownership, complete or partial.

Time is on your side

When the need is months away, the lowest long-term cost is worth the paperwork.

When Something Else Fits Better.

The need cannot wait weeks

A merchant cash advance can fund within 24 to 48 hours of approval while the SBA file is built. Merchant cash advance

A shorter, simpler loan

A term loan funds as fast as 3 to 7 days on a lighter file. Term loans

Equipment financing is secured by the equipment and funds in days. Equipment financing

Commonly Asked Questions

An SBA loan is a loan from a lender that the U.S. Small Business Administration partly guarantees. The 7(a) program lends up to $5 million over terms up to 10 years, or 25 for real estate; the 504 program lends up to $5.5 million at a fixed rate for real estate and major equipment.

What is the maximum SBA 7(a) loan?
$5 million, per the SBA, or $500,000 through SBA Express. Since July 4, 2026, a borrower who takes a 7(a) loan first can add up to $5 million through 504, for $10 million combined.
How long does it take to get an SBA loan?
Weeks rather than days. The lender underwrites the file first, and the SBA lists its own turnaround on a standard 7(a) at 5 to 10 business days. When the need cannot wait, a short-term product can bridge the gap while the SBA file is built.
What is the difference between a 7(a) and a 504 loan?
7(a) is the general program: working capital, equipment, real estate or buying a business, up to $5 million. 504 is for real estate and major equipment, up to $5.5 million at a fixed rate, over 10, 20 or 25 years.
What interest rate does an SBA loan charge?
The borrower and lender negotiate it, but it may not exceed the SBA's maximum, which is set as a margin over a base rate and is smaller on larger loans. 504 loans carry a fixed rate.
Can green card holders get an SBA loan?
Not since March 2026. Every owner must now be a U.S. citizen or U.S. national. A business with a green card holder owner can still use term loans, lines of credit, equipment financing and advances.
Can I use an SBA loan to buy a business?
Yes. The 7(a) program funds a change of ownership, complete or partial, along with the working capital to run it.
