How Homeowners Find a Contractor.

Urgent jobs start on Google, and Google screens the contractor before it shows the ad.

Google's own help center says local results are mainly based on relevance, distance and popularity, and that there is no way to request or pay for a better local ranking. For a contractor that means the Business Profile has to be complete and accurate, and the reviews have to keep coming.

Most contractors work at the customer's address, not their own. Google's rule for that case is plain: if you don't serve customers at your business address, remove it from the profile and list service areas instead. Google allows up to 20 service areas, within about two hours of driving from the base, and says there should be only one profile per business. A listing per town, or a virtual office that is not staffed, breaks those guidelines.

Local Services Ads are the format where Google screens the business before it runs. Google says the screening varies by category and location and may include background, business registration, insurance and license checks. HVAC and plumbing are classed as urgent categories, so the technicians are background checked too, and roofing requires general and professional liability insurance, plus state-level licenses where local law requires them. Google has moved to a single Google Verified badge for all advertisers, and advertisers pay for leads that arrive as calls and messages.

Reviews decide the shortlist. BrightLocal's 2026 survey found 47% of consumers won't use a business with fewer than 20 reviews and 74% only care about reviews from the last three months, so a steady request routine matters more than a one-time push.

Commonly Asked Questions

Batch Marketing runs search, Google Ads, Google Business Profile management, websites and job-site photo and video editing for HVAC, plumbing, roofing and electrical contractors, with the New Jersey registration or license number on every ad that needs it.

Do I have to put my HIC number on Google Ads?
New Jersey requires the home improvement registration number on all advertisements distributed in the state. Licensed HVACR contractors and master plumbers have their own license-number rules on top of that.
Can I hide my address on Google?
Yes, if customers don't come to it. Google says to remove the address from the profile and list the areas you serve instead.
Can I have a Google listing for each town I serve?
No. Google says there should be one profile per business, with a service area. Town coverage belongs on pages of your own website.
What happened to Google Guaranteed?
Google moved to a single Google Verified badge for all advertisers and is discontinuing the Money Back Guarantee that came with the Google Guarantee badge.
How far can my service area reach on Google?
Google allows up to 20 service areas, and says the overall area shouldn't be more than about two hours of driving from where the business is based.
