The Health & Fitness Association's 2026 U.S. Consumer Report found 81 million Americans belonged to a gym, studio or other fitness facility in 2025, an all-time high and 5.2% more than in 2024. Adults aged 18 to 24 had the highest membership penetration at 35.5%, members 65 and older grew 8.6% year over year, yoga was the most practiced activity at 17.7 million members, and pickleball grew 21.3% to 7.6 million.
The youngest members are the heaviest users of short video. Pew Research Center's 2025 survey found 80% of adults aged 18 to 29 use Instagram and 63% use TikTok, while Facebook reaches 80% of adults aged 30 to 49.
Booking can start on Google. Gyms, fitness centers, yoga studios and personal trainers are named categories for Google's appointment booking integration, which sends people from Search and Maps to the booking provider's page, and MINDBODY is on Google's partner list. For class pages, Google's event markup only supports pages about a single event, and Google recommends marking up individual event pages rather than schedule pages.
In New Jersey, the Division of Consumer Affairs requires health clubs to register, and clubs selling memberships longer than three months or collecting more than three months of payments to keep a bond or letter of credit. The FTC's 2024 click-to-cancel amendment is not in force: after the Eighth Circuit vacated it, the FTC restored the earlier Negative Option Rule in February 2026.
