POS for Food Trucks: Take Cards Where the Wi-Fi Isn't.

A system that runs on battery and cellular data, and keeps selling when the signal drops.

12,487mobile food service establishments with employees in the US, per Census County Business Patterns 2023.
81%of those establishments have fewer than five employees, per the same Census file, which counts only businesses with payroll.
At the counter

What This Business Needs at the Counter.

No outlet, no Wi-Fi, a narrow window and a long line.

A signal that comes and goes

Festival lots and parks have weak cellular. The device has to know what to do when it drops.

Battery all shift

There is often no outlet to plug into. The reader has to last until close.

Room for one device

The service window is narrow. Fewer boxes on the ledge is better.

Menus that change by stop

A brewery Tuesday and a festival Saturday sell different things, and items sell out mid-shift.

Tell regulars where you are

The truck moves. Customers need to know where it is parked today.

Offline risk, capped

A card taken offline can decline later. The owner should decide how much exposure to carry.
The system we'd put in

A Reader on Your Phone's Data, or Clover Flex.

Square Terminal, Handheld and Register need Wi-Fi. Square Reader rides your phone's data; Clover Flex has LTE built in.

Also in the lineup

Square Terminal. A good printer-in-one device for a truck with reliable Wi-Fi from a commissary hotspot, but it has no cellular of its own.

Square Reader on cellular

The $59 reader pairs to your phone and its cellular data, on an all-day battery.

Square offline mode

Readers can take offline payments for 24 hours, uploaded within 72, with a per-transaction cap you set.

Location texts to regulars

Text and email regulars where the truck is parked and what is new.

86 an item mid-shift

Mark an item out of stock from the Terminal or kitchen display and it stops selling.

Clover Flex with LTE

Clover Flex 4 lists 4G LTE, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and an internal receipt printer in one handheld.

Clover offline window

Clover Flex takes offline payments for up to 7 days by default, with per-transaction and total limits.

The connectivity facts decide this page. Square's hardware pages say Square Terminal requires an internet connection through Wi-Fi or Ethernet, Square Handheld requires a Wi-Fi network, and Square Register connects by Wi-Fi or Ethernet. None has cellular. Square Reader pairs over Bluetooth to a phone or tablet, which can connect through Wi-Fi, a hotspot or cellular data, and Square describes its battery as lasting all day.

Square's offline help article sets the limits. On readers you have 24 hours to accept offline payments, and offline payments must be uploaded within 72 hours or they expire and cannot be reprocessed. Square does not notify you of declines while offline, and the seller is responsible for expired, declined or disputed offline payments. Tap to Pay on iPhone and Android, manually entered cards and gift cards do not work offline. You can set a per-transaction offline maximum anywhere from $1 to $50,000.

Clover's developer documentation lists Clover Flex 4 with 4G LTE, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth and an internal thermal receipt printer, and says Clover Mini and Flex are set by default to take offline payments for up to 7 days, with merchant limits on the per-transaction and total offline amount. That makes Flex the one device answer when a phone plus reader is not wanted. Clover does not publish the data plan cost on the pages we could read, so we quote it with the device.

Census County Business Patterns counts only employer businesses, so trucks run by an owner with no payroll are not in the 12,487 figure.

Cash discount

The posted price carries the card cost and paying cash earns the discount. Federal law bars the card networks from stopping a discount for cash.

Surcharging in New Jersey

New Jersey caps a credit card surcharge at what processing actually costs you, disclosed before the customer is charged: on signs at entry and checkout, and on the menu for restaurants.

Visa's 3% ceiling

Visa caps a surcharge at your rate or 3%, whichever is lower, on credit only. Debit and prepaid cards are never surcharged.

Notice before you start

Visa requires you to notify your acquirer at least 30 days before you start surcharging.

On a truck the device choice is about cellular and battery first.

No. Square Terminal, Handheld and Register need Wi-Fi or Ethernet. Square Reader uses your phone's cellular data or a hotspot.
How long can I take cards with no signal?
On Square Reader, 24 hours of offline payments, uploaded within 72 hours. Clover Flex defaults to up to 7 days offline. Upload as soon as you can either way.
