At the counter

What This Business Needs at the Counter.

Many services per visit, many techs per floor.

Mani by one, pedi by another

One client, two technicians, one payment, and both techs expect their share of the tip.

Several services per visit

Gel, art and a pedicure stack on one ticket and one appointment.

Stations and chairs

Pedicure chairs and manicure tables are limited. The calendar has to know which is free.

Gift cards

Gift cards are sold to people buying for someone else, and each one has to work at the register.

Walk-ins all day

Bookings fill the morning, walk-ins fill the gaps, and both need a place in line.

Pooled or direct tips

Some floors pool tips across techs, some don't. The system should do either.
The system we'd put in

Square Appointments, Split Across the Floor.

When one client is shared across techs, Square's proportional tip split fits that floor, and Square Premium adds station assignment.

Also in the lineup

Clover. Clover handles online booking with deposits and branded gift cards, but we could not find a multi-tech tip split in its documentation.

Tips split across techs

On a multi-staff appointment, tips are allocated to each assigned technician.

Tip pooling

On Plus and Premium, pool tips by transaction, by hours worked or by percentage.

Stations on the calendar

Drag and drop and color code the calendar; on Square Premium, assign booths, resources and techs to bookings.

Gift cards

Physical and eGift cards, with a 2.5% load fee on Free and Plus and none on Premium.

Text confirmations

Clients reply to the SMS reminder to confirm, cancel or change their appointment.

Square's multi-staff appointment article says tips are allocated to each assigned staff member, in proportion to the services each one performed. If a client wants to tip only one technician, Square says to split the visit into separate transactions.

Square's tip pooling article says that by default each team member keeps 100% of the tips they collect, and that on Plus and Premium a location can pool tips per transaction, by hours worked or by percentage. Square's nail salon page describes assigning booths, resources and techs to bookings on the calendar, and tips set as a fixed amount or a percentage.

The Square Appointments pricing page lists gift cards with a 2.5% load fee on Square Free and Plus and 0% on Premium, and Square Assistant, which lets clients reply to SMS reminders to confirm, cancel or change. Resource management for chairs and stations is listed on Square Premium; multi-staff booking, the waitlist and no-show fees start on Plus.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics reports 201,800 manicurist and pedicurist jobs in 2025, with 23% self-employed and 76% in personal care services. Census County Business Patterns counts 34,417 nail salons with employees in 2023; nonemployer salons are not in that count.
