POS for Pizzerias: Answer the Phone Already Knowing the Order.

Caller ID, delivery zones and your own online ordering, running through an outage.

At the counter

What This Business Needs at the Counter.

A pizzeria is a phone room with an oven attached.

Know the caller

Regulars should not have to spell their address every Friday. The phone number should bring up the customer.

Is it in range

Somebody has to decide if an address is deliverable and what the fee is, while the line is still ringing.

The usual, again

Many delivery orders repeat the last one, so the customer's order history should come up with the call.

Toppings that price themselves

Every topping carries its own price, and the register has to add them without a calculator.

One screen, not five tablets

Marketplace orders arriving on separate tablets get re-keyed by hand, and that is where mistakes happen.

Selling through an outage

A Friday night internet drop cannot stop the ovens or the card machine.
The system we'd put in

Order Counter, Built for the Phone Rush.

Square suits a slice counter. Order Counter documents caller ID and driver address texts, which phone-heavy delivery shops need.

Also in the lineup

Square for Restaurants. Better for a walk-up slice shop that wants published pricing, with crust, size and topping modifiers and a branded online ordering page.

Caller ID

The caller's information pops up automatically, across as many phone lines as you set.

Delivery zones

Addresses autocomplete and land in the delivery zone you drew.

Driver address texts

The delivery address goes to the driver by text or email.

Marketplace orders in the POS

Uber Eats and Grubhub orders print in the kitchen through ItsACheckmate.

Per-topping pricing

OptionSets give each topping its own price.

Hybrid server

An in-house server keeps stations selling through an internet outage.

Order Counter describes its delivery tools in its own knowledge base: a Caller ID module that shows customer phone numbers and, with Caller ID for takeout turned on, brings the customer's information up automatically; a setting for how many phone lines the module supports; delivery addresses sent to drivers by text or email; and delivery zone rules including a fee for addresses outside any zone.

Its delivery and takeout page adds address prediction as the order is typed, a check against polygon delivery zones so the order can be dispatched, and customer order history for reorders. Order Counter says on the same page that most delivery orders resemble earlier ones; that figure is its own claim, not an industry statistic.

On online ordering, Order Counter offers an ordering portal for the restaurant's own site, positioned as a way around the commission charged by marketplace ordering companies. It does not publish a price for that portal or for the POS, so we quote it per location after a demo. Marketplace orders still arrive, but through ItsACheckmate into the POS and kitchen printer instead of a separate tablet.

Square for Restaurants has a dedicated pizzeria page with modifier groups for crust, size and toppings, a branded online ordering page, pickup and local delivery. It is the better choice where most orders happen at the counter. Neither vendor documents half-and-half topping pricing on the pages we checked, so we test that during the demo with your menu.

Pricing

Cash discount

The posted price carries the card cost and paying cash earns the discount. Federal law bars the card networks from stopping a discount for cash.

Surcharging in New Jersey

New Jersey caps a credit card surcharge at what processing actually costs you, disclosed before the customer is charged: on signs at entry and checkout, and on the menu for restaurants.

Visa's 3% ceiling

Visa caps a surcharge at your rate or 3%, whichever is lower, on credit only. Debit and prepaid cards are never surcharged.

Notice before you start

Visa requires you to notify your acquirer at least 30 days before you start surcharging.

Commonly Asked Questions

For a pizzeria that lives on phone and delivery orders, BatchOut recommends Order Counter, a hybrid restaurant POS with caller ID, delivery zone mapping and its own online ordering.

Can the POS show who is calling before I pick up?
Yes. Order Counter's Caller ID module shows the customer's number and, for takeout and delivery, pulls up their information automatically. You set how many phone lines it watches.
How does it know if an address is in my delivery area?
Order Counter predicts the address as it is typed and checks it against the polygon delivery zones you draw. You can also set a fee for an address outside every zone.
Can I stop re-keying Uber Eats and Grubhub orders?
Yes. Order Counter takes Uber Eats, Grubhub and other marketplace orders straight into the POS and the kitchen printer through its ItsACheckmate integration.
What happens if the internet goes down on a Friday?
Order Counter runs on an in-house server, so the stations keep taking orders. Offline card transactions can be set to process automatically when the batch runs.
Does each topping get its own price?
Yes. Order Counter's OptionSets are built for toppings that each carry a price, with as many options per item as the customer picks.
Why not just use Square?
For a counter-service slice shop Square is a good fit and its pricing is published. For a pizzeria where the phone and delivery drive the night, Order Counter's caller ID and dispatch tools are the difference.
