What We See When an Englewood File Lands.
An Englewood file comes from one of three places. A practice near the hospital waits on reimbursement, a Palisade Avenue restaurant lives on card receipts and show nights, and a south side shop is paid on terms. Each needs a different product.
Where the businesses are
Palisade Avenue and the downtown
Shops, restaurants and offices inside the Special Improvement District, with bergenPAC drawing the evening trade.
Engle Street and Grand Avenue
County Route 501, lined with car dealerships and the Englewood Health hospital campus.
The south side industrial district
Industrial and research zoning between the rail line and Overpeck Creek, off Route 4.
Palisades Court and the neighborhood strips
A ShopRite anchored center downtown, plus small districts at Hudson Avenue and at Lafayette Place.

Englewood is a hospital town with a downtown attached. The city's 2024 Master Plan, citing New Jersey Department of Labor data, counts 16,537 covered jobs in Englewood in 2022 across 1,334 firms and government offices, and 6,386 of those jobs are in health care and social services, the largest sector. Englewood Hospital on Engle Street, founded in 1890, is the center of that, and Englewood Health reports more than 4,600 employees in its 2025 facts and figures.
The downtown is the other half. The same Master Plan counts 491 businesses and government offices in the Downtown with 4,022 employees, using ESRI business data, and calls the district a regional jewel for its shops, restaurants and the 1,367 seat Bergen Performing Arts Center on North Van Brunt Street. The Englewood Special Improvement District, funded by an assessment on downtown property owners, covers the blocks between Demarest Avenue, Englewood Avenue, Tenafly Road and Grand Avenue.
South of the downtown is a third economy most visitors never see. The city's Research, Industry and Medical zone and the Light Industrial zone around it run from Linden Avenue toward the Leonia border, between the rail line and Overpeck Creek, along Route 4. The Master Plan describes it as a district of small to medium sized enterprises, and notes that manufacturing jobs in the city have declined since 2014.
What We Place Most in Englewood.
Each one has its own page, written around how that business actually gets paid.
Medical and dental practices
Health care is Englewood's largest employment sector, and the practices around the hospital are equipment heavy and paid on reimbursement.
Restaurants and food service
A downtown dining trade that moves with the bergenPAC calendar, where a slow month and a broken walk in can land together.
Contractors and trades
Trades and fabricators working out of the south side industrial district, paid on terms that run behind the payroll.
Auto and retail
Dealerships and service businesses along Grand Avenue and the downtown's specialty retail, where inventory comes first.
