What We See When a Ridgewood File Lands.
The downtown is newly organized. The Ridgewood Business Alliance, formed in late 2025, manages one of the newest Special Improvement Districts in New Jersey, alongside the Ridgewood Guild and a Chamber of Commerce with more than 300 members. A Ridgewood file is typically an established boutique, restaurant or practice with good deposits and a specific purchase in mind.

Ridgewood is a walkable village downtown that serves a wide trade area. The village's 2025 Housing Element puts its 2020 Census population at 25,979 and counts 13,577 people working in Ridgewood in 2023, using state labor data. The downtown B-1 and B-2 business zones cover about 78 acres, including the Franklin Avenue corridor, with Ridgewood Station on the Main and Bergen County Line at Garber Square.
The biggest change in a generation happened in April 2024, when The Valley Hospital moved out of its 73 year old Ridgewood building into a new hospital in Paramus. In 2023, before the move, health care accounted for 47.2 percent of private sector jobs in the village. What remains on North Van Dien Avenue is Valley's Ridgewood campus, an outpatient center with imaging, endoscopy, lab and rehabilitation services, and the medical offices around it are adjusting to the change.
Restaurants are the second engine. Accommodations and food service is the village's second largest private sector by jobs in the same state data, and in summer 2023 the village closed East Ridgewood Avenue to cars on weekends for outdoor dining. Parking is managed tightly: the Hudson Street garage, opened in November 2020, reserves its top floor for downtown employees and owners on a village permit.
